Tsugaru-nuri Polishing “Togidashi” Experience

“Togidashi” is a traditional technique of Tsugaru-nuri (Tsugaru lacquerware), in which multiple layers of lacquer are applied to a textured surface and then carefully polished flat to reveal intricate patterns. During the experience, you can choose to polish either a pair of chopsticks or a spoon. The final appearance of your piece will vary depending on how and where you polish—creating a one-of-a-kind work of art. You may take your finished piece home on the same day, or select an optional gloss finishing service, after which your lacquerware will be mailed to your home once completed.

Tsugaru Kogin zashi Embroidery Stitching Workshop

“Tsugaru Kogin-zashi” is a traditional embroidery technique from the Tsugaru region of Aomori Prefecture. It is said to have originated when local farmers—who were once allowed to wear only hemp clothing—developed it to reinforce their garments and protect themselves from the harsh northern winters. By stitching fine geometric patterns one by one, beautiful motifs gradually emerge on the fabric. In this workshop, participants can enjoy creating their own designs on items such as coasters or bookmarks, under the gentle guidance of a professional Kogin artisan.

In Aomori, winter brings long months of snow and severe cold. Yet within this harsh climate, the people of Aomori have cultivated warmth through creativity — expressed in their handcrafted artistry and rich food culture. At Hotel JAL City Aomori, we aim to create a stay where guests can experience the beauty of local culture firsthand. To that end, we are pleased to present our winter-exclusive event, “Sounds, Crafts, and Flavors of Aomori’s Traditions.” During your stay, you can listen to the powerful sounds of live Tsugaru shamisen performances, experience traditional craftsmanship through Tsugaru lacquerware and Kogin embroidery workshops, and savor the comforting flavors of Aomori’s winter cuisine, including Denshu amazake and Kenoshiru. Even during the snowy season, when outdoor sightseeing is limited, guests can immerse themselves in the culture of Aomori right here in the hotel. Through these experiences, we hope to share the artistry of Tsugaru lacquer and Kogin embroidery—crafts now facing a shortage of successors—and help pass on the value of handcraftsmanship to future generations. The “Sounds, Crafts, and Flavors of Aomori’s Traditions” event represents the first step in our ongoing journey to bring the culture and charm of Aomori closer to our guests. Hotel JAL City Aomori will continue to collaborate with local artisans and producers, sharing Aomori’s traditions and culinary heritage while walking hand in hand with the local community toward the future.
